Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle in Northumberland is one of the largest inhabited castles in England and has been the seat of the Percy family, the Dukes of Northumberland, since the early 14th century. Founded after the Norman Conquest and much expanded and restored over the centuries, it played an important role in guarding the border with Scotland. In recent decades it has also become widely recognised on screen, notably standing in for exterior scenes of Hogwarts in the early Harry Potter films.

The castle and its region feature in some of England's oldest supernatural writing: the medieval chronicler William of Newburgh recorded a story of a revenant, sometimes called the "Alnwick Vampire," said to trouble the area. Modern visitors occasionally report cold spots and uneasy feelings in older parts of the castle, but such accounts are anecdotal.

Alnwick is best enjoyed as a living, working castle with a deep and well-documented history. Its medieval chronicle traditions are a fascinating window into how earlier generations explained the unexplained, quite apart from any modern ghost claim.

Alnwick Castle is a private home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland that opens to the public seasonally, typically from spring through autumn, with state rooms, grounds and family attractions. Admission is ticketed, and the neighbouring Alnwick Garden is a separate paid attraction, so visitors should plan and check opening dates in advance.

As a family residence and major heritage site, guests are asked to respect the private areas, follow staff guidance, and take care of the historic buildings and grounds during their visit.
