The rabbit hole (conspiracy theories)

Cover-up

An effort to hide, destroy, or spin evidence so the public does not learn what happened.

Real cover-ups leave paper trails, missing files, changing stories, or whistleblowers. Absence of evidence is not automatically a cover-up.

Browse-only as a phrase — it appears constantly in ordinary news talk.
