The Crow's Letter

October

Family members write mysterious letters to each other, signed "The Crow". Fill them with compliments, funny memories, predictions or kind challenges, such as "do something nice for someone this week".

A blank black envelope with an orange seal, a crow feather, and a pen on a wooden desk.

What you need

  • Paper and envelopes
  • A pen
  • A household rule that an adult knows the writer of every letter
  • A short list of ideas: a compliment, a funny memory, a kind challenge

How to do it

  1. Explain the game before the first letter. The Crow is someone in the house. Letters stay inside the family.
  2. Write something kind: a compliment, a memory, or a small challenge such as doing something nice for someone that week.
  3. Sign it “The Crow.” An adult in the household knows who wrote it before it is left out.
  4. Leave it somewhere shared, such as the hall table or under a mug. Not in a bedroom at night.
  5. If a letter would embarrass someone, or is meant for anyone outside the family, it does not go out.

One household's version

A parent writes: “The Crow remembers when you shared the last biscuit. This week, hold a door for someone.” The child writes back to a grandparent who lives with them. A parent knows both writers. No letter goes to school or online.

Safety note: This is a family-only tradition. An adult in the household should always know who wrote each letter. Keep it kind, and never anonymous with people outside the family.
