The Family Ghost

All October

Invent a friendly family ghost with a name and a personality, such as Sir Rattlebones, Agnes Greyveil or The Pumpkin Keeper. Through October the ghost leaves clues, treats and funny notes around the house.

A friendly smiling ghost on a kitchen table beside a blank note and two biscuits.

What you need

  • A name and a one-sentence personality, agreed by the household
  • Small blank cards
  • Gentle treats: a biscuit, a sticker, a joke
  • A list of shared rooms, with bedrooms at night left off it
  • An adult who knows the plan

How to do it

  1. At the start of October, invent the ghost together. Sir Rattlebones, Agnes Greyveil, and The Pumpkin Keeper are starting points. Give them one harmless habit.
  2. Say the rules out loud: notes are kind, jokes are gentle, and the ghost never visits a bedroom after lights-out.
  3. Through October an adult leaves one clue, treat, or funny note in a shared room: the kitchen, the hall, or a bookshelf.
  4. Children can write back and sign their own names, so the game stays inside the family.
  5. On Halloween the ghost leaves a thank-you and retires until the following October.

One household's version

Agnes Greyveil likes custard creams and terrible puns. She leaves a biscuit on the kitchen table with a note that says the kettle is brave. She never leaves anything in the children's rooms. A seven-year-old writes back on the fridge.

Safety note: Keep the notes playful and gentle, nothing that would frighten little ones, and nothing that suggests a ghost is in a child's bedroom at night.
