Family Fortune Night

31 October, after trick or treating

Read tarot or fortune cards for fun, and write predictions for next year. Seal them in envelopes and open them next Halloween.

A stack of patterned fortune cards, blank envelopes, and a pencil on a wooden table.

What you need

  • Fortune cards, picture cards, or homemade cards with kind phrases
  • Envelopes and a pen
  • A box kept with the Halloween decorations
  • An adult ready to stop the game if it turns gloomy

How to do it

  1. Play once you are home. Say out loud that the cards are a game.
  2. Draw for fun. Keep every comment kind. Nothing about health, and nothing about anyone dying.
  3. Each person writes one hopeful note for the household: a trip, a skill, a joke that will still be funny. Seal it.
  4. An adult keeps the envelopes in a box with the Halloween decorations.
  5. Open them when Halloween comes round again, and laugh if they were wrong.

One household's version

A child draws a card with a moon on it and says the family will have a picnic. They write that, seal it, and the box goes into the decoration cupboard. The following Halloween they open it and remember the rain. Nobody mentions illness.

Safety note: Keep it light and playful, and keep predictions positive, with nothing about health or anyone dying.
