Make it a tradition
The Family Halloween Journal
Every year
Keep a family journal of costumes, funny moments, best decorations, photos and ghost stories. Over the years it becomes your family's Halloween history book. Some families call it a Book of Shadows.

What you need
- A notebook that can last, or a box of envelopes
- Pens
- Prints of photos you are happy to keep at home
- A short prompt list: costumes, the best decoration, a funny line, the film you watched
How to do it
- On Halloween, or the day after, take ten minutes. Each person adds one line or one picture.
- Keep the book in the house. Photos of children stay in the journal and are not posted publicly.
- Some families write Book of Shadows on the cover. That is only a nickname. Use it if everyone is comfortable, or pick another title.
- The following October, read one old page before you write the new one.
- A single sentence is enough. The book is a habit, not homework.
One household's version
They stick in a photo of the paper-bat garland and the line “Dad's hat fell in the soup.” The photo is printed at home and does not go on social media. The children letter “Our Halloween Book” on the cover themselves.
Safety note: Keep photos in your own album or journal, and avoid posting children's photos publicly.
