Halloween Stockings

Hung through October

Hang stockings by the fireplace and fill them with sweets, small gifts, film vouchers that suit everyone's age and a collectible Halloween ornament.

What you need

  • One stocking or large sock per person
  • A hook or ribbon away from any working fire
  • Sweets checked for allergies
  • A small gift
  • A film voucher, or a homemade ticket, that suits that person's age
  • One small Halloween ornament

How to do it

  1. Hang the stockings at the start of October where you will see them. A shelf or a row of hooks works if you have no fireplace. Keep them away from a working fire.
  2. Agree whether you fill them once or add one tiny thing across the month, so the cost stays planned.
  3. Match any film ticket to the youngest person who will use it. A homemade ticket for a family film night counts.
  4. Check sweets and small parts before anything goes in.
  5. Empty them together on Halloween, and pack the ornament away with the other Halloween decorations.

One household's version

Four socks hang from the bookcase, away from the heater. Each holds a wrapped sweet from the allergy list, a sticker, a homemade ticket that says “family film night,” and a wooden bat. The bat goes back into the decoration box afterwards.

Safety note: Check for allergies and small parts.
