Make it a tradition

The Harvest Feast

Halloween week

Hold a special Halloween meal every year with pumpkin soup, apple desserts, black and orange foods and lantern-lit dining. Everyone comes in costume.

A Halloween table with pumpkin soup, an apple tart, orange and black plates, and glowing flameless candles.

What you need

  • A menu built around a dish you already know, such as pumpkin soup
  • An apple pudding
  • Black and orange food where it is easy: grapes, clementines, dark biscuits
  • Flameless candles
  • Fancy dress
  • The household allergy list

How to do it

  1. Pick an evening in Halloween week and write the menu before you shop. Check allergies first.
  2. Cook a dish the household already likes. The tradition is the repeated meal.
  3. Set the table with flameless candles. Costumes and real flames do not mix.
  4. Everyone comes in costume, even if it is only a hat.
  5. Serve a pudding you can recognise from one October to the next.

One household's version

They eat pumpkin soup, cheese on black plates, and baked apples. The candles are battery lights. The toddler wears a cape over pyjamas. The soup recipe is the one from last October, written on a card in the kitchen drawer.

Safety note: Use flameless candles around costumes, and check for allergies when planning the menu.
