The Haunted Ornament Collection

One each year

Buy one special Halloween ornament every year, like collecting Christmas baubles. After ten years you'll have a collection full of memories.

A branch in a vase hung with a glass pumpkin, a bat, and a star, with one more ornament still in its box.

What you need

  • One Halloween ornament, new or second-hand
  • A branch, a small tree, or a hook already out of reach
  • A line in the family journal about who chose it
  • A soft cloth if the ornament is glass

How to do it

  1. Choose one ornament. Handmade and charity-shop finds count.
  2. Hang glass and small pieces out of reach of young children and pets. A high branch or a closed cabinet both work.
  3. Write who chose it, and what the household was doing that October.
  4. Bring the same ornaments out every October and add the new one last.
  5. If one breaks, keep the note. The memory does not depend on the glass.

One household's version

The first ornament is a wooden bat from the Pumpkin Box. It hangs on a high twig in a vase on the sideboard. A child can look and cannot reach the glass pumpkin added later. The journal says who chose the bat.

Safety note: Glass ornaments are fragile, so hang them out of reach of young children and pets.
