The Ancient Ram Inn

The Ancient Ram Inn is a timber-framed building in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, parts of which are traditionally said to date to around the twelfth century. It is often described as having been built to house workers connected with a nearby church, and local lore claims it stands on an old track or earlier site. It operated as an inn for much of its history before ceasing to trade as a pub and passing into private ownership, later opened by its owners for paranormal visits.

Within paranormal circles the building has a formidable reputation. Its late owner reported frequent encounters, and rooms such as the "Witch's Room" and "Bishop's Room" feature in accounts of a monk, a spectral woman and poltergeist-style activity. Visitors and investigators report cold spots, touches and unexplained noises.

Most of these claims originate with the owners and with ghost-hunting tourism, and there is no independent verification of the more dramatic stories. The inn's great age and unusual atmosphere are real, but its status as "one of Britain's most haunted houses" rests firmly on anecdote.
