Bachelor's Grove Cemetery

Bachelor's Grove Cemetery is a small, long-neglected burial ground in a wooded corner of the Rubio Woods Forest Preserve near Midlothian, on the southwestern edge of the Chicago area. Established in the mid-19th century, around the 1840s, it served local settler families for generations before falling out of regular use. Over time, with few active burials and its isolated setting, the cemetery suffered neglect and repeated vandalism, leaving toppled headstones and a quiet, overgrown clearing reached by a path through the trees.

The cemetery is one of the most storied "haunted" sites in the Midwest. Reports include a so-called "White Lady," phantom lights, and a widely circulated 1991 photograph said to show a seated figure. These accounts are anecdotal, and the famous image and stories are much debated; they are best regarded as folklore attached to an atmospheric, secluded place.

Beyond the legends, Bachelor's Grove is a genuine piece of local history and a reminder of the fragility of small rural cemeteries. Preservation-minded volunteers have worked to document and protect it, and it deserves to be treated as a resting place rather than a thrill-seeking destination.

Bachelor's Grove Cemetery lies within a public forest preserve and is reached on foot by a trail; there is no visitor centre, staffing or facilities at the site itself. Access follows forest-preserve hours, and the ground is uneven, so daytime visits and sturdy footwear are sensible.

Because it is a historic cemetery that has suffered from vandalism, visitors are strongly urged to be respectful, avoid disturbing graves or leaving litter, and treat it as the burial ground it remains.
