Fort Belgica
A pentagonal Dutch sea fortress built in 1611 atop a hill overlooking the nutmeg islands where colonial massacres secured a spice monopoly.

History & haunting lore
The VOC exterminated or enslaved most Bandanese inhabitants in 1621 to control the world's nutmeg supply, then ringed the survivors with forts like Belgica's five bastions. Cannons still point at waters where Dutch admirals burned indigenous fleets.
Restoration lets visitors walk the ramparts above lava-flow shores. Divers and hikers describe an odd pressure in the air — perhaps humidity and history combined — on an archipelago where genocide and luxury spice once shared the same harbor.
Current site status
Reachable by ferry or flight from Ambon; facilities on Banda Neira are basic and cash is essential.
