Cane Hill Hospital (site)
Urban explorers once traded photos of empty wards—reports of whispers in corridors the wrecking crews later erased.

History & haunting lore
Cane Hill was a large Victorian psychiatric hospital opened in the 1880s on the North Downs fringe at Coulsdon, part of London’s asylum hinterland. It closed in stages around the early 1990s–2000s and most buildings were demolished for housing, leaving fragmentary reminders and a strong memory among former staff, patients’ families, and photographers. Asylum architecture and care regimes are the documented core.
Before demolition, explorers described voices, footsteps, and oppressive wings—stories that still circulate online. Such accounts cannot be checked on vanished wards. Treat them as contemporary legend attached to a real institution.
The hospital is gone as a visitable shell; only public roads and new development remain. Do not trespass on private construction or residual fenced land.
Current site status
Former asylum largely demolished and redeveloped; not an open heritage attraction. Any remaining fenced structures or private land are off-limits. Research via archives, published histories, and lawful public viewpoints only—no urbex. Residents of the new housing deserve ordinary neighbourhood quiet.
