Stay on Main

The Cecil Hotel is a large historic building on Main Street in downtown Los Angeles, California, opened in 1924 as an upscale hotel for business and leisure travellers. As the surrounding district declined in the mid-twentieth century, the hotel's fortunes fell, and over the decades it became associated with poverty, crime and a series of tragic deaths. Part of the building later operated as a budget hostel under the name "Stay on Main".

The hotel's grim reputation was intensified by the widely reported 2013 death of Elisa Lam, a Canadian student whose disappearance and the release of unsettling elevator footage drew international attention before her death was ruled accidental. The case, together with the building's difficult history, has made the Cecil a fixture of true-crime and paranormal media. Claims of hauntings are anecdotal and speculative; the documented reality is a sombre social history that deserves to be treated with sensitivity toward real victims.

The building's genuine significance is as a piece of 1920s downtown Los Angeles and as a case study in urban change. It is most respectfully understood not as a spectacle but as a place whose history touches serious questions of housing, hardship and loss.

The Cecil Hotel is not a tourist attraction. Following renovation, the building reopened around 2021 providing residential and affordable/supportive housing, and it does not offer hotel stays, tours or public interior access. Its interiors are private and off-limits to visitors.

Because the site is now people's homes and is connected to real tragedies, visitors should view it only from the public street, avoid disturbing residents or staff, and refrain from trespassing or intrusive photography. It should be treated with discretion and respect rather than as a destination.
