History & haunting lore

Charles Fort is a seventeenth-century star-shaped artillery fort guarding Kinsale harbour, built after the 1601 Battle of Kinsale and later held through Jacobite and British service. OPW maintains extensive ramparts, barracks ruins, and interpretive displays. Its sister James Fort faces it across the estuary.

The White Lady—often told as a bride tied to a tragic officer’s death—is the fort’s signature ghost story, with reports of a woman in white on walls and stairs. Guides may recount it as local legend. No archival proof elevates it beyond folklore.

OPW tickets; ramparts are exposed and windy. Combine with Kinsale town walking.
