Old Charleston Jail
Cellblock tours after dark—people grip the rail when something unseen seems to grip back.

History & haunting lore
Charleston’s Old City Jail (active through much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries) held debtors, pirates in popular telling, Civil War prisoners, and later inmates in a grim Romanesque complex. It now runs as a commercial history and paranormal tour venue. Documented incarceration conditions were harsh.
It ranks among the South’s most marketed haunted prisons: touching sensations, voices, and named inmate spirits feature on tours. Showmanship and sincere fright reports coexist. Arrive sceptical of any single dramatic claim.
Tickets via tour operators; wear closed shoes for uneven floors.
Current site status
Tour-only historic jail—no unsupervised wandering. Day history and night paranormal tours sell separately and sell out in peak season. Heat, dust, and stairs are real. Follow guide safety rules; some areas remain structurally limited.
