Chiayi Old Prison

Chiayi Old Prison in southern Taiwan was built during the Japanese colonial period and began operating in the early 1920s as a branch of Tainan Prison. Laid out on the radial "Pennsylvania" plan, with cell wings and workshops fanning out from a central control point, it is now the only substantially intact colonial-era prison building surviving in Taiwan. It remained in use for decades after the Second World War as Chiayi Prison, until a new facility was completed in 1994 and the old premises became a sub-prison, later recognised for its architectural and historical value and designated a national monument in 2005.

As an old prison, it carries the sober associations of confinement and punishment, and some visitors find the cell blocks and solitary quarters quietly unsettling. Any ghostly reputation is anecdotal and subjective, arising naturally from the setting, and the site itself is interpreted through prison history and heritage rather than the supernatural.

The prison's genuine value lies in its rare architecture and its role as a witness to the development of Taiwan's penal system across the colonial and post-war eras. Preserved as the Prison Museum, it offers an unusually complete view of historic incarceration, its daily routines and its material culture.

Chiayi Old Prison is preserved as the Prison Museum, a national monument managed under the Agency of Corrections, and is open to the public, generally with free admission and guided tours at set times; it usually closes on Mondays and some public holidays. Visitors can see the radial cell wings, workshops, watch areas and staff quarters.

As a heritage museum on a former prison, ordinary visitor courtesy applies, and photography and access follow the site's posted rules. Travellers should check current opening hours and tour schedules in advance, as guided visits are the main way to see parts of the interior.
