History & haunting lore

The Citadella in Victoria is the ancient fortified heart of Gozo island in Malta. In 1551, Ottoman corsairs attacked and enslaved virtually the entire population of Gozo — some 5,000 people. The citadel was rebuilt and has served as a cathedral town and fortress since.

Local tradition holds that the collective scream of the enslaved population echoes through the citadel on the anniversary of the raid. Visitors at other times report footsteps on the rampart walk, shadows in the old prison, and cold spots in the cathedral crypt despite Malta's heat.

The Citadella is open year-round and free to enter, with several small museums inside the walls. Gozo is reached by ferry from Malta. The ramparts offer panoramic views. Summer heat is intense — bring water and sun protection.

Current site status
