Craigmillar Castle
From the tower, Edinburgh sprawls below—and some hear court whispers tied to the Craigmillar Bond against Darnley.

History & haunting lore
Craigmillar Castle is a well-preserved medieval and Renaissance ruin south-east of Edinburgh’s centre, long linked to the Preston family and to Mary, Queen of Scots’ visits. In 1566 nobles allegedly discussed the fate of Lord Darnley here—the so-called Craigmillar Bond—before his murder at Kirk o’ Field. Historic Environment Scotland opens the towers and ranges to the public.
Haunt reports include a lady in white, children’s laughter, and heavy atmospheres in the older tower. Local ghost walks sometimes include the site. Documentary intrigue around Mary’s court is firmer than any apparition claim.
Day tickets via HES; expect multiple floors of stone stairs. The surrounding country park offers views back to Arthur’s Seat.
Current site status
