Dudley Castle
Zoo visitors after closing whisper about the Grey Lady on the keep—skirts brushing stone where no one walks.

History & haunting lore
Dudley Castle crowns Castle Hill above the Black Country, with Norman origins and substantial medieval and Tudor remains inside Dudley Zoo’s grounds. Civil War sieges damaged the fortress; later owners left it as a romantic ruin. Today the keep, chapel, and visiting centre interpret Marcher and industrial-border history.
The Grey Lady is the best-known spectre in local telling, joined by reports of a drummer, cold spots in the chapel, and shadows on the motte. Zoo and castle staff sometimes share after-hours anecdotes. Folklore and tourism marketing amplify what remains unverified.
Admission is usually via Dudley Zoo & Castle tickets. Expect steep paths, animal exhibits, and busy family crowds; night ghost events sell out when scheduled.
Current site status
Castle ruins sit inside Dudley Zoo & Castle; a combined ticket is typically required. Paths are steep and can be slippery; follow zoo safety rules near animal enclosures. Seasonal Halloween or ghost nights are ticketed separately—confirm dates on the zoo website.
