Fremantle Prison

Fremantle Prison was built by convict labour between 1851 and 1859 as the Convict Establishment, a vast limestone complex overlooking the port of Fremantle, Western Australia. Following the end of transportation it passed to colonial control and operated as the colony's, and later the state's, principal prison. It remained a maximum-security gaol until its closure in 1991, making it one of Australia's longest-serving penal institutions. In 2010 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Australian Convict Sites.

With more than a century of incarceration, executions and hardship behind its walls, the prison has become strongly associated with ghost stories, and its after-dark tours lean into that reputation with accounts of footsteps, shadows and unsettling atmospheres. These experiences are subjective and best treated as part of the site's folklore rather than as verified phenomena.

The prison's genuine value is historical: its cell blocks, gatehouse, tunnels and convict-era fabric offer an unusually complete record of penal life across several eras. As a World Heritage site and museum, it preserves confronting but important chapters of Western Australia's colonial and social history.

Fremantle Prison is open to the public as a museum and major heritage attraction. Entry to the gatehouse, visitor centre and gift shop is free, while guided experiences such as day tours, torchlight tours and the underground tunnels tour are ticketed.

Tours involve stairs, uneven surfaces and, in the case of the tunnels tour, confined and physically demanding conditions, so visitors should check requirements in advance. Opening hours and tour availability are listed on the official website, and booking ahead is recommended for popular sessions.
