History & haunting lore

Jagannath Hall is one of the original residence halls of the University of Dhaka, established in 1921 and traditionally home to students of the country's religious minority communities. Sited near the centre of the campus in the Bangladeshi capital, it has long been a focus of intellectual and cultural life. It is also indelibly linked to one of the darkest episodes of the 1971 Liberation War: during Operation Searchlight, on the night of 25–26 March 1971, the Pakistani army attacked the university, and Jagannath Hall was a principal target, where large numbers of students, staff and residents were killed in the massacre.

Given this history of atrocity, the hall and its grounds are places of profound remembrance, and the memory of the killings casts a long shadow. Any sense of a haunting atmosphere reported by visitors is an emotional response to documented mass death rather than a supernatural claim, and the site's meaning lies firmly in history and commemoration.

A memorial on the grounds honours those who died in 1971, and the hall stands as a symbol of the sacrifices of the Liberation War and of the university's role in the nation's history. It remains a working residence hall and a place of mourning, study and remembrance.

Current site status

Jagannath Hall is an active residential hall of the University of Dhaka rather than a tourist attraction, so its buildings are primarily for students and staff; the grounds include a memorial to the victims of the 1971 massacre, and a sculpture and observances mark the events of that year. Public access is informal and centred on the memorial rather than the residences.

Visitors interested in the history should behave as they would at any memorial and functioning institution — quietly and respectfully — and be mindful that this is a site of grave wartime atrocity. It is located within the University of Dhaka campus in the city centre and is best visited with awareness of university routines and any access arrangements.
