Littlecote House
Staff still retell Wild Darrell’s crime—a midwife’s lantern tale, then a child’s cry that seems to come from empty rooms.

History & haunting lore
Littlecote House is an Elizabethan mansion beside the Kennet, long associated with the Darrell family and later used as a hotel and wedding venue. Seventeenth-century scandal attached to “Wild Will” Darrell includes a much-repeated story of a newborn murdered after a secret birth—legend mixed with fragmentary contemporary rumour. Roman remains nearby add deeper archaeological interest.
Haunt reports speak of a crying infant, a midwife’s figure, and unrest in certain bedrooms. Guests and paranormal groups have logged cold spots and voices. The crime narrative remains contested history; the ghost stories are later accretion.
Access is primarily as hotel guests or event attendees rather than a conventional day museum. Book through the operator and respect private function spaces.
