History & haunting lore

Malbork Castle is the largest castle in the world by land area, built by the Teutonic Knights in the thirteenth century as their headquarters. The massive brick complex includes the High Castle, Middle Castle, and Grand Master's Palace, all meticulously restored after World War II damage.

Closing-time staff and evening visitors report armoured figures in the Grand Master's Palace corridors, chanting from the castle chapel when services are not scheduled, and cold drafts in the dungeons that defy the heating. The castle's sheer scale means remote wings are rarely visited, adding to the sense of unseen activity.

Malbork Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site open year-round. The visit takes several hours due to the enormous size. Accessible by train from Gdańsk. Audio guides are essential for context. Dress warmly in winter as the brick corridors are freezing.
