Niedzica Castle
A Polish frontier castle above an artificial lake where the legend of a cursed Inca treasure draws treasure hunters and ghost seekers alike.

History & haunting lore
Niedzica Castle overlooks the Czorsztyn reservoir in the Pieniny Mountains of southern Poland. The medieval fortress guarded the Hungarian-Polish border and passed through many hands before becoming a museum. A persistent legend claims that an Inca princess's descendant brought treasure here that remains hidden and cursed.
Visitors and staff report a woman in white near the tower overlooking the lake, cold drafts in the chambers associated with the treasure legend, and unexplained sounds in the basement corridors. The isolated mountain setting and the reservoir's flooding of the old valley amplify the atmosphere.
The castle museum is open year-round with seasonal hours. The mountain roads require careful driving, especially in winter. Combine with rafting on the Dunajec River gorge for a full Pieniny visit.
