History & haunting lore

The Old York Hospital stands on Brook Street in York, Western Australia's first inland town, east of Perth. A fine example of the Federation Arts and Crafts style, it was designed by the Chief Government Architect George Temple-Poole and is closely associated with York's growth during the gold-boom era. It served the district as a hospital and later found other uses, including as accommodation for tourists and as a private residence, and it forms part of the York Hospital Heritage Precinct alongside the nearby Residency Museum and the former convict depot site.

As an old hospital that saw illness, recovery and death, the building has attracted local ghost accounts and stories of a lingering presence. These are anecdotal and subjective, of the kind that gathers around many historic hospitals, and are recorded here as folklore rather than as anything demonstrated to be supernatural.

The building's real significance is architectural and historical: an imposing landmark that closes the vista of Clifford Street and contributes strongly to York's heritage townscape. It stands as a link to the provision of government services and to the development of one of Western Australia's most historic towns.

Current site status

The Old York Hospital building is a heritage-listed property that is privately owned and is not open to the public; it can be appreciated from the street but should not be entered, and its grounds are private. Visitors interested in the site's history are best served by the adjacent Shire of York Residency Museum, a public municipal museum that interprets the town's past, including the story of the hospital precinct.

The wider York townscape is readily explored on foot, and the Residency Museum has its own opening hours and admission arrangements. Anyone photographing or viewing the old hospital should do so respectfully from public areas and observe the owners' privacy.
