Predjama Castle

Predjama Castle is built into the mouth of a cave in a vertical cliff near Postojna in south-western Slovenia. First recorded in the 13th century, it was constructed against and within the rock face, using the cave system behind it for shelter and secret access. The present Renaissance appearance dates largely from the 16th century, when the castle was rebuilt after earlier damage. Its dramatic position, roughly a hundred metres up a sheer wall, made it exceptionally difficult to besiege and gave it a defensive advantage few fortresses could match.

The castle is best known for the tale of the 15th-century knight Erazem of Predjama, a robber baron said to have withstood a long siege by using the cave passages to bring in supplies, before meeting his end through betrayal. Some visitors find the cliffside setting eerie and speak of a brooding atmosphere. Such impressions are subjective, and the Erazem legend blends documented history with embellishment.

Predjama is celebrated as one of the world's most striking cave castles, an ingenious marriage of architecture and natural landscape and a major Slovenian heritage attraction.

The castle is open to the public as a museum, managed together with the nearby Postojna Cave, with year-round opening and an admission fee; combined tickets with the cave are available. An audio guide leads visitors through the rooms built into the rock.

In the warmer months the cave beneath the castle can also be visited on separate tours. Paths and stairs are steep and can be cool and damp, so sturdy footwear and a jacket are sensible.
