Rakvere Castle
An Estonian hilltop ruin rebuilt as a medieval experience centre — costumed interpreters share the site with presences that move through the torture chamber uninvited.

History & haunting lore
Rakvere Castle is a thirteenth-century fortress on Vallimägi hill in northeastern Estonia. The Danish-built castle passed through Livonian, Swedish, and Russian hands before falling into ruin. It has been restored as a medieval experience centre with interactive exhibits and a torture chamber.
Staff working in the torture chamber and underground passages report movements and sounds not part of the programme — footsteps when alone, cold drafts from sealed chambers, and objects displaced overnight. The centre's atmospheric reconstructions blur the line between history and reported phenomena.
Rakvere Castle is open seasonally with interactive programmes. The medieval experience includes craft, combat, and dungeon activities. Rakvere is accessible by bus from Tallinn. Estonian weather means cold winters and unpredictable summers.
