History & haunting lore

Shepton Mallet Prison, known locally as "The Dana," occupies a site used for punishment since the early seventeenth century, with the present Victorian county gaol taking shape across the nineteenth century. For nearly four centuries the complex held debtors, felons and, in its final decades, Category A men under some of the strictest regimes in England. The last executions took place here in the 1920s, and the prison only closed in 2013 after a long working life that included wartime use by the American military.

Given that history of confinement, punishment and death, the prison has become one of Somerset's best-known paranormal venues. Investigators report cell doors shifting, footsteps on empty landings, voices in the chapel wing and a heavy atmosphere on the execution landing. Commercial operators now run guided day tours, ghost hunts and overnight events; those impressions remain anecdotal but the environment is genuinely bleak.

The documented carceral record is sobering enough without embellishment. Access is by ticketed tour or booked event only — this is not a casual walk-up site. Follow staff safety briefings, wear sensible footwear for stairs and uneven floors, and treat the stories of real prisoners with respect.

Current site status

Shepton Mallet Prison operates as a visitor attraction with daytime history tours and separately ticketed evening ghost hunts and overnight paranormal events. Access is by advance booking through licensed operators; the site is not open for unstructured public wandering.

Expect enclosed spaces, steep stairs and low light on night events. Minimum ages and mobility restrictions apply on some tours — check the operator's site before travel. Treat the site as a place of real hardship and death, not only as entertainment.
