Shih Chung Branch School

The Shih Chung Branch School occupies a grand old mansion in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The building began life in the late nineteenth century as an opulent private residence, an example of the eclectic colonial-era architecture for which George Town is celebrated, before later being used as a Chinese school. During the Japanese occupation of Malaya in the Second World War, the property is reported in local accounts to have been put to use by the occupying forces, a period widely associated in the community with fear and hardship.
