Clock Tower lanes where Vlad was born—after dark, footsteps on the covered stair seem one too many.

History & haunting lore

Sighișoara’s UNESCO citadel is a remarkably intact Saxon fortified town in Transylvania, with a Clock Tower, coloured burgher houses, and the Covered Staircase to the hill church. Vlad III (Dracula) was born here in 1431, a fact that fuels tourism beyond solid medieval urban history. Craft markets and festivals keep the upper town lively.

Haunt and vampire marketing mix with quieter reports of figures on walls and odd sounds in towers. Separate medieval guild history from Bram Stoker-driven expectation—Stoker never set Dracula here.

Citadel streets are free to walk; museums and towers charge. Cobbles are steep—wear grip shoes.

Current site status

Living historic town centre with free street access and ticketed towers/museums. Overnight stays in citadel pensions are normal tourist lodging. Respect residents after 22:00—keep ghost-walk noise down. Churches and cemeteries on the hill deserve quiet.
