History & haunting lore

Trim Castle on the Boyne is the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, begun by Hugh de Lacy in the late twelfth century with a monumental square keep. OPW conservation and the Braveheart filming association boosted visitor numbers. The town of Trim wraps around the walls with further medieval churches.

Haunt talk includes knights on the battlements and uneasy cellars. Much is casual tourist lore. The engineering of the keep and river ford control are the documented achievements.

Keep tours are guided and ticketed; outer areas may differ. Boyne paths flood—check conditions.

Practical note: keep to OPW routes, watch river-path mud after rain, and treat film-tourism crowds as separate from any personal odd experience on the walls.

Current site status

OPW site; access to the keep interior is typically by guided tour with limited numbers. Exterior grounds hours differ. Steep stairs inside the keep. Book ahead in summer. No authorised night exploration of the walls.
