Valle de la Luna

Valle de la Luna, the Valley of the Moon, lies in the Atacama Desert near San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile, within the Los Flamencos National Reserve. Shaped over vast spans of time by wind and water acting on salt and sediment, it is a landscape of sculpted dunes, jagged ridges, dry lake beds and salt-crusted formations. Its stark, otherworldly terrain has led scientists to compare it to the surface of the Moon and Mars, and it draws travellers for its dramatic sunsets over the arid hills.

As a remote and profoundly silent desert, the valley has inspired atmospheric stories rather than a single ghost legend. Some visitors describe an eerie stillness, strange acoustics as salt crystals expand and contract, and a feeling of solitude that can seem uncanny after dark. These are subjective impressions, readily explained by the extreme environment, and no supernatural claim is implied.

The valley's true significance is geological and cultural: it preserves striking evidence of the region's arid past and lies within an area long inhabited by the Atacameño people. Protected within a national reserve, it rewards those who come to appreciate one of the driest, most extraordinary landscapes on Earth.

Valle de la Luna is a protected area within the Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos, administered in cooperation with CONAF and the local Atacameño community. It is open to visitors, usually with an entrance fee and set opening hours, and access is via San Pedro de Atacama by tour, bicycle or vehicle.

Conditions are extreme, with intense sun, high altitude, cold nights and little water, so visitors should carry water, sun protection and warm layers, keep to marked trails and follow ranger guidance. Confirm current fees, hours and any access restrictions before setting out, and take all litter away to protect the fragile desert.
