Vianden Castle
Luxembourg's grandest castle above the Our valley — night staff report a count's footsteps in the Knights' Hall and candles that reignite after being extinguished.

History & haunting lore
Vianden Castle is a large Romanesque and Gothic fortification overlooking the Our valley in northeastern Luxembourg. Built between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries for the Counts of Vianden, it was restored in the twentieth century and is now a state museum.
Night security and event staff report footsteps in the empty Knights' Hall, candles that reignite after being snuffed during evening events, and a cloaked figure on the chapel balcony. The castle's scale and vertical position above the town create strong acoustic effects that may contribute to these accounts.
The castle museum is open year-round with a chairlift from the town available in season. The interior involves many stairs and long galleries. Victor Hugo's former residence in the town below makes a good companion visit.
