Millmount Fort
A Martello tower on a mound above Drogheda where Cromwell's massacre echoes — defenders' cries and musket fire are reported on the anniversary.
History & haunting lore
Millmount Fort overlooks Drogheda from an ancient mound on the south bank of the Boyne. The site has been fortified since pre-Norman times and witnessed Cromwell's notorious 1649 massacre of the town garrison. The current Martello tower houses a museum.
Local tradition holds that on the anniversary of the massacre, defenders' cries and the sound of musket fire carry from the mound. Visitors at other times report cold spots near the tower, footsteps on the surrounding ramparts, and an atmosphere of defiance on the hill that overlooks the town.
Millmount Museum is open year-round with local history exhibitions. The mound offers views over Drogheda and the Boyne valley. The town is accessible by road and rail from Dublin. The hill involves a steep walk from the town centre.
