History & haunting lore

Zvíkov Castle stands at the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers in South Bohemia, a royal fortress dating to the thirteenth century. When the Orlík Dam raised water levels, the castle's lower parts were partially affected, adding to its isolated feel.

The Zvíkov Imp — Zvíkovský rarášek — is a local legend: a demonic presence said to haunt the Markomanka tower. Animals allegedly refuse to enter the tower, electronics malfunction, and people who sleep there report nightmares or illness. Photography in the tower sometimes produces unexplained anomalies in local accounts.

The castle opens seasonally with guided tours. Reaching it requires a drive through forest roads or a boat trip. Facilities are basic. The confluence setting is beautiful for photography and offers a contrast to nearby Orlík Castle.

Current site status

Seasonally open with guided tours. Access requires forest roads or a boat trip — public transport is very limited. Basic facilities on site. The riverside and confluence setting can be damp and cold even in summer. Combine with nearby Orlík Castle for a day trip.
