Paranormal history

Bodmin Jail was built in 1779 and was among the first British prisons designed to hold inmates in individual cells rather than communal wards. Over its working life it held debtors and felons under Cornish courts, saw public executions, and during the First World War is said to have safeguarded national treasures including the Domesday Book. The prison closed in 1927 and fell into ruin before recent investment restored wings as immersive exhibits, including a theatrical Dark Walk, and an adjoining luxury hotel overlooking the old exercise yards.

Given its history of imprisonment and hanging, the jail has a strong reputation for hauntings. Visitors report cold spots, disembodied voices, footsteps and feelings of unease, and some accounts are linked by local tradition to individuals held or executed here. Ghost tours form part of the commercial offer, but the reports themselves remain anecdotal.

The stronger material is court record, transportation and the grim routine of capital punishment in a rural county. Approach the paranormal layer with an open but critical mind; the documented carceral history is sobering enough without theatrical embellishment.
