Paranormal history

Muncaster Castle stands above the River Esk near Ravenglass in Cumbria, on a site with Roman associations and a medieval pele tower at its core. It has been the home of the Pennington family for many centuries, and the castle was extended and remodelled over time, notably in the Victorian period, into the grand house seen today. It sits within extensive gardens and grounds with sweeping views towards the Lakeland fells.

Muncaster is often described as one of England's most haunted castles. Local tradition speaks of Tom Skelton, or "Tom Fool," a jester associated with the house, and of a "White Lady" and the reported cries of a child sometimes linked to the Tapestry Room. Visitors and staff describe cold spots, footsteps and uneasy feelings. These experiences are widely retold but remain unverified.

The castle is a good place to weigh documented family history against inherited legend. Its architecture, portraits and estate records provide a solid factual backbone, allowing visitors to enjoy the ghost stories while recognising where the historical record ends and folklore and atmosphere take over.

Visiting & access

Muncaster Castle is a privately owned family home that is open to the public as a visitor attraction, with the castle, gardens, and a hawk and owl centre. Opening is generally seasonal, and an admission charge applies; the gardens and grounds often have a longer season than the castle interior.

Muncaster also runs dedicated evening ghost events, which are ticketed separately. Visitors should check current opening times, prices and event dates before travelling, and treat the house, collections and grounds with care and respect.
