Paranormal history

The imposing building at Newsham Park in Liverpool opened in the 1870s as the Liverpool Seamen's Orphan Institution, a large Victorian orphanage built to care for the children of mariners lost at sea. Designed in a grand Gothic style, it later served as a hospital before eventually closing and falling largely into disuse. Its scale, institutional past and long vacancy have given it a bleak, imposing presence that draws considerable public curiosity.

The former orphanage and hospital has become one of the North West's best-known venues for organised ghost hunts, and participants report footsteps, voices, cold spots and shadowy figures in its corridors and wards. These accounts come largely from paid overnight events and are subjective and unverified, shaped as much by the building's atmosphere and reputation as by any evidence.

A measured view keeps the genuine, sometimes sombre history — an orphanage born of maritime tragedy — at the centre. That documented past is more affecting than the sensational claims that now surround the site.

Visiting & access

Newsham Park Hospital is a privately owned, largely disused building and is not a conventional visitor attraction. Public access is generally limited to organised, ticketed paranormal or history events run by commercial operators; the surrounding Newsham Park itself is a separate public park.

The building is not open for casual visits, and entering without permission would be trespassing and potentially unsafe. Anyone interested should only attend through official organised events, follow all safety instructions, and treat a site with a genuinely poignant history respectfully.
