Hypnagogia

The half-asleep state when falling asleep (or waking) where vivid images, sounds, or a sensed presence can appear.

Hypnagogic experiences are common and often mistaken for bedroom apparitions. Hypnopompic refers to the waking side of the same border.

Timing relative to sleep is one of the most useful details in an experience report.
